Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today, we delve into a cornerstone of our community’s history—the Kankakee Public Library. Join me, Jake LaMore, as I wrap up another insightful episode of the Kankakee Podcast with our esteemed guests Jack Klasey and Jorie Walters. Together, we unpack the library’s rich narrative from its inception to its vibrant present.
“The Kankakee Public Library isn’t just about books; it’s about creating a space where everyone in our community can come to learn, explore, and grow together.” — Jorie Walters
Birth of a Dream
In the late 19th century, Kankakee faced a significant cultural gap—a city without a public library. This all changed in 1895, thanks to the determined efforts of Dr. Andrew Cutler, a local dentist with a passion for accessible knowledge. Gathering nearly 200 signatures, Dr. Cutler’s advocacy paved the way for the Kankakee Public Library’s establishment in March 1896.
“To see a community come together for the love of knowledge was truly inspiring. Dr. Cutler’s dream for a library wasn’t just about books; it was about creating a hub for education and connection.” — Jorie Walters
The Grand Opening
The library officially opened its doors on January 5, 1899, amid a flurry of community celebration. Bands played, and eager residents lined up to get their first library cards. A cornerstone-laying ceremony marked a key milestone, featuring police, fire department, and local lodges.
Iconic Symbols
The library’s grand entrance was once guarded by two cast iron lions named Seymour and Readmore. Originating from Gosage’s Dry Goods store in Chicago, these lions were transferred to Kankakee in 1905. After spending almost 25 years with the Galeno department store, they were finally acquired by the library in 1929 for $25—a move that embedded them deeply in the library’s and the community’s heritage.
“They were more than just decorations; to us kids, Seymour and Readmore were mystical guardians of knowledge, sparking our imaginations from a young age.” — Jack Klasey
Growing Pains and Solutions
The original Kankakee Public Library faced space constraints, prompting a move to the executive center in 2004. This shift wasn’t just geographical but also structural; the floors had to be reinforced to support the vast weight of books. Today, the library spans across the first, second, and third floors, with a leased fourth floor housing Gardant Management Solutions since early 2024.
Time Capsule Mystery
In the late 1990s, an effort to find a time capsule behind the 1898 cornerstone ended in disappointment. Despite the unsolved mystery, the library’s foundation remains a crucial part of our city’s heritage.
Community, Education, and Events
Fostering Imagination
Librarians hold a unique place in our community, offering not just resources but also fostering imagination, especially among children. My wife, a children’s librarian, is a testament to this, dedicating her efforts to inspiring young minds.
“Librarians are the unsung heroes of our community. Their ability to find information and connect with patrons is nothing short of magical.” — Jake LaMore
