BONUS: Inside KVTA’s Production of The Producers: Humor, Challenges, and More

Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today, we’re diving into a world of glitz, glamour, and uproarious laughter with a tale that’s been the talk of the town. The upcoming Kankakee Valley Theater Association’s (KVTA) production of Mel Brooksโ€™ “The Producers” promises an unforgettable journey through Broadway’s golden age.

The Producers: A Story of Intentional Chaos

In our latest episode, I sat down with two key players from this highly anticipated production: Andrew McBurnie, a returning guest, and Cody Marcukaitis, joining us for the first time. Together, they gave us a sneak peek behind the curtain into the wild, hilarious, and somewhat controversial world of “The Producers.”

A Plot Like No Other

Cody Marcukaitis sheds light on the plot, describing it as a convoluted yet hilarious scheme where the protagonists aim to produce a theatrical flop. The show within the show, titled “Springtime for Hitler,” is intentionally offensive and absurd, directed by the flamboyant and eccentric character, Roger. Set in the 1950s, this story unfolds during Broadway’s golden era, offering a satirical look at the time’s cultural milieu.

Mel Brooks’ Signature Humor

Mel Brooks, with his Jewish background and unique comedic style, brings a flavor of immediate and energetic humor throughout “The Producers.” His approach is to make people laugh straightforwardly and universally, ensuring his comedy resonates with a wide audience. Cody emphasizes the improvisational nature of their production, highlighting moments of breaking the fourth wall and ad-libbing that keep the audience on their toes.

Meet the Characters

Andrew McBurnie takes on the role of Leo Bloom, a straight-laced accountant whose character evolves significantly throughout the show. Typically known for more robust roles, Andrew finds Leo’s quirky personalityโ€”complete with a security blanketโ€”a fun departure from the norm.

“Itโ€™s all about embracing the characterโ€™s nuances and letting go,” says Andrew.

Another notable character is Max Bialystock, played by Cody Marcukaitis, who balances the chaotic environment as the “straight man” in the narrative. Max is a complex characterโ€”a lead role with the flair of a character actor, giving Cody the chance to explore a multifaceted performance.

An Ensemble Cast to Remember

The production features a dynamic ensemble cast of around 12 members, each playing multiple roles, making the performance vibrant and diverse. Among the standout performances are:

  • Kyle Cassidy as Roger, whose flamboyant humor adds a unique sparkle to the show.
  • Thomas McMahon as Carmen Guiller, partnering with Kyle for strong on-stage chemistry.
  • Paul Snyder as the unpredictable Nazi living with pigeons, adding an element of surprise.

Preparing for Broadway on a Local Stage

Producing “The Producers” is no small feat. Cody Marcukaitis recaps the tireless efforts and dedication required in bringing this Broadway hit to life. “Itโ€™s a love letter to Broadway, complete with big laughs and spectacle,” he shares. The result is an experience that truly comes to life on stage.

The Bigger Picture

Reflecting on the showโ€™s impact, Andrew McBurnie praises the breadth of talent within the cast and crew. Initially unfamiliar with the production, he now recognizes its cult following and encourages both new viewers and longtime fans to see it multiple times, promising theyโ€™ll catch new details with each viewing.
