#196: Celebrating 150 Years of Bourbonnais with the Kankakee County Museum

Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today we take you on an enlightening journey through the rich history of Bourbonnais as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. Joined by esteemed guests Jack Klasey and Jory Walters, we delve into the fascinating tales that have shaped Bourbonnais into the vibrant village it is today.

The Beginning of Bourbonnais

Our story starts in 1833 when the Potawatomi tribe left the area, paving the way for settlers. Noel Levasseur is credited as the first permanent European settler in Kankakee County. As Jake LaMore explained, “You can’t get much more historic than Bourbonnais. That’s where it all began.”

The French Influence

Bourbonnaisโ€™ history is deeply rooted in French heritage, with many early settlers migrating from Quebec. This period brought about a unique blend of culture and agriculture, forming the backbone of the village’s identity. โ€œThey brought people and went back to Quebec and brought more people,โ€ Jorie Walters noted, highlighting the continuous French connection.

The Evolution of a Community

As the village developed, landmarks like the Maternity BVM Church and the Bourbonnais Grove Historical Society emerged. The podcast touched on significant buildings such as the log cabin schoolhouse of 1837 and the notable St. Viator’s College, which transitioned into what is now known as Olivet Nazarene University. Jack Klasey recounted, โ€œIt eventually grew into the College of St. Viator.โ€

A Modern-Day Bourbonnais

Fast forward to today, Bourbonnais has blossomed into a dynamic community, bolstered by institutions like Olivet Nazarene University. โ€œOlivet has become a very vital part of Bourbonnais and the whole county,โ€ Jack Klasey pointed out. This growth is illustrated by initiatives like the multi-use development, The Grove.

Celebrating Together

As Bourbonnais commemorates its sesquicentennial, the village reflects on its vibrant history and cultural heritage. The Soiree de Bourbonnais event on May 17 at The Grove is set to be a memorable celebration.

A Community United by History

In closing, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Bourbonnais on its 150th anniversary. It’s a tale of perseverance, unity, and a testament to the enduring spirit of its people. From early settlers to modern-day residents, every individual has played a part in shaping this extraordinary village.
