BONUS: Behind the Scenes of KVTA’s Shrek Jr. with Paula and Beth Sutter

Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today I’m thrilled to bring you behind the curtains of a theater production that promises to enchant and entertain all ages. The Kankakee Valley Theater Association is bringing the fantastical world of Shrek Jr. to life, and we’re diving into what makes this show a must-see this weekend.

In this special bonus episode, I had the pleasure of welcoming the co-directors of Shrek Jr., Paula and Beth Sutter. Together, they’ve woven a story that blends fairy tale charm with meaningful lessons. As Paula beautifully described, โ€œItโ€™s a fractured fairy taleโ€ฆ about a green ogre who thinks heโ€™s ugly and doesnโ€™t have any friends.โ€ It’s a journey of self-discovery and friendship that resonates with audiences of all ages.

For the first time, Paula and Beth Sutter are co-directing, a role change from their past productions where Beth assisted Paula. While some might expect challenges, theyโ€™ve found their groove. As Beth shared, โ€œWe always bounce stuff off of each otherโ€ฆ itโ€™s been in planning since we announced it last year.โ€ Their ability to collaborate seamlessly is clearly reflected in the vibrant production of Shrek Jr.

With 92 auditions and 62 roles to fill, the casting process was no small feat. As they recounted, casting wasn’t just about selecting leads like Shrek or Fiona; it involved crafting an ensemble that brought the story to life. Paula highlighted the importance of allowing new talent to shine, encouraging young actors to continue honing their skills even if they werenโ€™t cast this time.

The Sutters are known for their signature touch of humor and community feeling in their productions. Paula promises that this show is no different, adding comedic elements that are sure to delight. โ€œIf there can be comedy, there will be comedy,โ€ Paula noted with a smile.

As this production wraps up, KVTA is already gearing up for future shows like Matilda and a fresh lineup for the upcoming season. With exciting titles like Footloose Junior and Big Fish on the horizon, there’s something for everyone in Kankakee County’s vibrant theater scene.
