#181: Michael Murphy on Helping Youth and Revitalizing Communities Through “Let’s Ketchup”

Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today I’m bringing you a story that dives deep into the heart of community service, personal growth, and the enduring impact of mentorship. In this episode of the Kankakee Podcast, we have the inspiring Michael Murphy, sharing his journey from rebellious teen to community advocate.

From Rebellion to Redemption

Michael Murphy starts by recounting a story his mother once told him about a rather disrespectful interview he had at a military school. Picture this: a young Michael, feet up on the interviewer’s desk, openly admitting he didn’t want to be there. This act of defiance led to a confrontation with his mom and highlighted Michael’s rebellious nature at the time.

A Transformative Trip to Vermont

Concerned for their son, Michael’s parents arranged a visit to Fields of Harvest in Vermont under the guise of a ski trip. This farm setting was worlds away from his urban New York upbringing. Upon arrival, Michael was greeted by Neil Kidney, a calm and experienced mentor. Despite Michael’s initial temper tantrum, Neil handled the situation with understanding rather than anger, a quality stemming from his extensive background in the military and contracting.

“Neil Kidney, a calm, experienced mentor, was unfazed by my outburst. His understanding disposition helped change my outlook on life,” recalls Michael.

Building a Life of Service

Over time, Michael embraced the practical discipline at Fields of Harvest, transitioning from a resistant youth to someone committed to making a difference. His experience in special education at Camelot for eight years demonstrated his dedication, where he helped students develop crucial life skills. His transition into the corporate world of insurance technology was driven by personal mental health needs, yet his passion for community service never waned.

Inspired to Give Back

Michael reflected on his career in education, expressing burnout and a desire to impact his community differently. This led to the inception of Let’s Ketchup, an initiative aimed at addressing food scarcity in Kankakee County. The organization saw rapid growth, significantly increasing food deliveries to needy families.

“We have partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank and identified areas like Kankakee County as facing severe food scarcity issues, especially affecting children,” Michael shared.

Supporting the Community

Michael also highlights another initiative called Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which addresses the need for beds for children. He discusses the establishment of “care closets” in schools, supplying non-perishable foods, hygiene items, and clothing to students.

“Teachers often use their own money to buy supplies for students. Our care closets aim to fill these gaps,” Michael explains.

A Heartfelt Appreciation

His gratitude for the Kankakee County community is evident. Despite stepping back from special education due to burnout, Michael channels his experiences into remarkable initiatives that address pressing needs.

“Thank you to Kankakee County for supporting Let’s Ketchup. Your continuous support and new opportunities keep us motivated,” says Michael with heartfelt appreciation.

Conclusion: A Journey of Growth and Service

Michael Murphy’s story is one of transformation, from a rebellious youth to a dedicated community servant. His journey underscores the power of mentorship, the importance of personal growth, and the lasting impact of giving back.
