#178: Stories From November’s Yarn Factory Listeners

Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today we’re diving into a tapestry of personal stories, with our storytellers bringing humor, nostalgia, and poignant memories!

The Thrilling Escape on Train Tracks

Our episode kicks off with Mike Leddin recounting a heart-pounding experience involving his car, a pair of stubborn train tracks, and a whole lot of luck. Mike’s ordeal started when his car got stuck on the tracks, leaving him torn between abandoning the vehicle or staying put. As fate would have it, Mike stayed until his car finally stopped moving, allowing him to exit safely. “I was glued to that seat until I could feel the tires drag no more,” he shared. In a twist that can only be described as miraculous, the car started right up, just in time for the tow truck to do its job.

Bill Yohnka smoothly transitions us to our next storyteller, Halina Gumiela, with gratitude and acknowledgment of Mike’s gripping tale.

Beyond Assumptions: Halina Gumiela’s Chicago Adventure

Halina takes us on a delightful journey to Chicago, where she and her husband aimed to enjoy a Winslow Homer exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. With the exhibit behind them, they ventured to a bustling restaurant, only to be met with lengthy wait times. Serendipity smiled upon them when a well-dressed stranger intervened, leading them to a private table and complimentary champagne. “It was as though we were touched by the wand of a fairy godmother,” Halina mused about their unexpected VIP treatment, pondering whether it was mere coincidence or something more.

Love Letters and Lessons with Evangeline Johnson

Evangeline, aka Van, brings a heartfelt story from her seventh-grade days, involving innocent childhood crushes and sibling rivalries. After receiving a love letter from her brother’s friend, John “Fuzzy” Hair, Van fondly recalls, “I never thought that a crush could lead to such embarrassment.” The letter’s unexpected reading by her father at the dinner table brought laughter and lasting lessons about privacy and family dynamics. This story emphasizes the lasting impact of our formative years and the complexity of family relationships.

Darnell Davis Jr.’s Longest Walk

Darnell Davis Jr. shares “The Longest Walk of My Life,” a tale of endurance and the harsh reality of relying on personal willpower. Back in 2008, a young Darnell embarked on a grueling 5.9-mile walk across Milwaukee to pick up a paycheck, all while enduring the detox effects of niacin. “The taxis ignored my frantic waves like they sensed my desperation,” Darnell reflects, capturing the sheer exhaustion and determination of his journey. This story reminds us of the lengths we go to secure our livelihood and the valuable lessons we learn along the way.

Donna Worth’s Touching Tribute

We end on a touching note with Donna Worth’s story about her last-minute travel to Arizona for her cousin Jamie’s funeral. Despite missed flights and unexpected delays, Donna experienced the warmth and humor of her family, symbolized by a pickle used as a call button in Jamie’s caregiving. “That pickle incident became our little ray of sunshine in a time of sorrow,” she shared, highlighting the power of laughter even in the darkest times.
