Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Today, we’re delighted to bring you a heartwarming journey into the world of fashion, mentorship, and the power of persistence. In our latest episode, we dive into the inspiring story of local fashion designer and seamstress, Emily Sifrit, whose lifelong passion for sewing has shaped her unique path and elevated her brand, e.Kaye Collection, to new heights.
From Humble Beginnings to Mastercraft
Emily Sifritโs journey began in a humble settingโthe back room of her great-grandmotherโs house in St. Anne, a small farm town nearby Kankakee. At the tender age of seven, while her mother worked two jobs, Emily spent her evenings learning to sew. Her great-grandmother became her first mentor, guiding her through the intricacies of sewing and instilling a love for the craft.
“My great-grandmother taught me everything from troubleshooting to perfecting my stitches. Those lessons stayed with me as a constant source of inspiration,” Emily shares.
Embracing Fashion as a Career
Emilyโs connection to fashion took root early on, fueled by her creative spirit and sketches. Despite facing teasing and self-doubt during her school days, she never abandoned her passion. By high school, she began contemplating a career in sewing, researching job opportunities that aligned with her skills.
“By high school, I was seriously considering sewing as my future career. I would sketch designs and dream about making them a reality.” Emily recalls.
The Birth of e.Kaye Collection
e.Kaye Collection, named after her great-grandparentsโ last name โEk,โ was born from both heritage and ambition. The brand aims to offer custom pieces that serve as a mode of self-expression for the wearer. Emily emphasizes the importance of authenticity in her creations, aiming to make fashion that makes people feel good and express who they are.
“Fashion is about self-expression and feeling good in what you wear. Thatโs what I strive to provide through Ek Collection.”
Struggles, Successes, and the Power of Networking
Transitioning from doing primarily alterations to custom designs was no small feat for Emily. Her participation in fashion week was a pivotal journey that provided her with credibility, visibility, and an influx of custom orders. Though faced with time management challenges and the need for capable help in her studio, she never wavered in her commitment to her craft.
“Fashion week opened up so many doors. It gave me the platform to showcase my work and brought in a wave of new clients interested in custom designs.” she reveals.
Mentorship and Moving Forward
In 2017, Emilyโs career trajectory was forever changed after meeting mentor Rudy Arias, who helped her gain a healthier perspective on balancing her artistic endeavors and business responsibilities. This mentorship guided her through the emotional challenges of her career and aided in her ability to make strategic, objective decisions.
“Meeting Rudy was a turning point for me. He helped me learn how to distance myself emotionally from business decisions and look at things more objectively.”
The Importance of Feedback and Continuous Learning
Throughout our conversation, Emily highlighted the irreplaceable value of honest feedback in her work. It’s through constructive criticism that she continues to refine her designs and meet the ever-evolving demands of her clientele.
“Honest feedback is essential. It helps me grow as a designer and ensure that my pieces resonate with those who wear them.”
Conclusion: Following Your Passion
Emilyโs story is a celebration of following oneโs passion despite the obstacles. Her journey from a little girl learning to sew in her great-grandmotherโs back room to a fashion designer participating in major fashion events shows the power of dedication, mentorship, and creative expression.
“Itโs all about taking one step at a time and being consistent. Little steps over time make a big difference.”
