Today we’re bringing you an episode that’s steeped in local history and brimming with fascinating tales from a time when our downtown was the bustling heart of the community. Join us as we delve into the storied past of the iconic Hotel Kankakee, a landmark that once stood proudly in our town.
Hotel Kankakee: A Beacon of Modernity
Our exploration begins in the mid-1920s, a time of significant growth and development in downtown Kankakee. On July 15, 1925, the groundbreaking event for the new Hotel Kankakee took place, setting the stage for what would become one of the tallest buildings in town. Host Jake LaMore and guests Jack Klasey and Jory Walters from the Kankakee County Museum recount the monumental construction phase and the thriving business environment that surrounded the seven-story edifice.
โIt was a symbol of progress and modernity, catering primarily to commercial travelers with all the amenities one would expectโbanquet rooms, private dining rooms, and even a coffee shop,โ Jack shared.
A Hub of Activity and Elegance
The hotel quickly became a focal point for the community, hosting myriad events in its grand spaces like the Goldroom and the Ruby Room. These rooms were the venue of choice for wedding receptions, banquets, and even a banquet for Amelia Earhart and a surprise birthday party for a Hollywood actor.
โThe Goldroom could accommodate up to 200 people and was the site of so many memorable events,โ Jory reminisced.
The Decline and Redevelopment – A Troubled Era
Despite its early success, the Hotel Kankakee faced numerous challenges over the years. The rise of motor travel and motels along highways in the post-WWII era led to a decline in business. Financial difficulties mounted, with instances like water shutoffs and a hefty IRS bill in the 1980s marking its troubled times.
โIt was a tough time for downtown hotels everywhere, not just for Hotel Kankakee. The economic downturn and the rise in motor travel significantly impacted its patronage,โ Jack explained.
From Demolition to Development
In 1991, the hotel was sold to the city and subsequently demolished to make way for a $10.5 million downtown office development project. Its demolition left a lasting impact on the community, but it also paved the way for new opportunities, including the creation of parking spaces that facilitated various events and redevelopment efforts in the area.
The Architectural Legacy – A Tribute to the Past
While the physical structure of Hotel Kankakee may be gone, its legacy endures. The Kankakee County Museum proudly holds artifacts from the hotel, including about 6 feet of terracotta design located near the newspaper exhibit. Jake, Jack, and Jory also discussed other significant buildings from the era, highlighting the rich architectural history of downtown Kankakee.
โWe wanted to ensure that the rich history of the Hotel Kankakee was not lost to time. Even though the building is no longer there, its spirit and significance live on through artifacts and stories,โ Jory emphasized.
