Hello, Kankakee County and beyond! Welcome back to another thrilling episode of the Kankakee Podcast with our friends at the Kankakee County Museum. Today, we’re diving into the enchanting world of the French Heritage Museumโa place where history comes alive and our rich French legacy is celebrated. Whether you’ve paid a visit or it’s still on your list, this episode has something for everyone.
A Grand Opening with Heritage and Pride
The French Heritage Museum, though only twelve years old, has already become a cherished part of our community. Host Jake LaMore and his guests Jory and Jack reminisce about the museum’s grand opening, which showcased displays of flags from different branches and welcomed several hundred community members. Visitors left impressed by the new addition to our town.
Jack shared, “The turnout was incredible. People were genuinely excited to explore this new gem in our community.”
Supporting Our Heritage
Despite its success, the museum still faces challenges in securing funding for ongoing maintenance and operations. Fundraising efforts are crucial, especially for costs like heating, lighting, and genealogical software necessary to keep the museum running.
Jory emphasized, “Every little bit helps. We’re constantly working to gather funds to maintain and grow our exhibits.”
A Treasure Trove of History
The French Heritage Museum is more than just a buildingโit’s a repository of stories and artifacts. Originally a stable for Lemuel Milk’s prized Morgan horses, the stone barn has seen many incarnations, from an auto repair garage to a restaurant. The museum now boasts a large space with a kitchen, bathrooms, a gift shop, and books upstairs for events and progams.
Jake noted, “Lemuel Milk was a visionary. His contributions to our area are still evident today in the museum and beyond.”
Connecting Past and Present
The museum doesn’t just tell the story of French Canadian settlers; it reflects the broader French experience in Kankakee County, including our ties to families from France and Belgium. We delved into the rich tapestry of heritage, tracing back family names like the Blanchett family and learning about historical figures such as Noel Devasser.
Jack remarked, “Our museum is a living bridge between the past and present, connecting us with the French-speaking emigrants who shaped our community.”
Accessibility: A Journey Forward
While exploring the potential uses of the meeting room’s second floor, Jack raised concerns about accessibilityโa priority for creating an inclusive experience. Installing a lift or track system could be a solution, though it remains a long-term and costly endeavor.
“We aim to make the museum accessible to everyone,” Jack shared. “But it will take time and resources to achieve that goal.”
Celebrating and Preserving Our French Roots
This episode also highlights the museum’s participation in the French Heritage Corridor and its strong relationship with the Bourbonnais Grove Historical Society. From international visitors to local events like Bastille Day, the French Heritage Museum remains a focal point for celebrating our rich heritage.
Jake said, “The museum is a testament to our community’s commitment to preserving and celebrating our French roots.”
